in the "cnn newsroom." how about good news? we've got some. we'll start with that regarding the flu. despite warnings we are facing an em ep dymmek, the situation may be starting to improve. the cdc is releasing new numbers that show high numbers at least declining in parts of the country. but it is still it, under line this still a very dangerous situation with widespread activity now reported in 48 states. the cdc's latest count shows 20 children have died across the country. we'll have a live report. >>> moving on, it could be one of the most shocking admissions in sports history. "usa today" reporting that cycling superstar lance armstrong will admit to doping in an upcoming interview with oprah winfrey. >> the evidence came out against him, a massive file of evidence came out against him in october. and then in the three months since then, he's been keeping a pretty low profile. and i think he's been deciding what to do about it. he's kind of cornered himself because for many years now, he's strenuously denied these doping allegations and with all the evidence that's come out against hi

for much of the country through the weekend. >>> want to bring in meteorologist alexandre steel in the cnn weather service and in winter white. what's coming up with the weather? >> it's almost a joke miguel. earlier today we talked about they canceled the polar bear plunge because it was too cold. how cold is it? the good news, the arctic air that's been the culprit for this cold is this trough with this arctic air. but that will push eastward and in its place a warm ridge of pressure. so this ridge of high pressure moves in, allow for the south lit flow of air and warmer temperatures. on the whole this week, temperatures about 20 degrees warmer than where they've been. indicative of this, right now it's 22 in chicago. by monday, it will be 44. indy 50 by monday and the access of that warmth pushes south and east. louisville, nashville, remember yesterday ensconced in freezing rain? 68 flirting with 70 on tuesday. and it even moves further still on wednesday in the south carolina area like columbia 79 flirting with 80 degrees. so in the world of the temperatures, certainly a big rebound.

been discharged from the hospital. cnn national correspond respondent matthew chance is following developments from london. what is the hospital saying this morning? >> pretty good news malala yousefzai laying in the hospital since shot by the taliban, making a pretty good recovery. this is a picture of her walking out of her hotel room. speaking with nurses who have been giving medical care over the past several months. a statement saying malala is a strong young woman and worked hard with people caring for her to make excellent progress in her recovery. she will be staying at her parents' temporary home in birmingham in england, where the hospital is located. they have been flown out from pakistan. the father has been given a job in birmingham for the next three years as the consulate. they expect to stay there for the foreseeable future. she will be going back into the ward wards at the end of this month, beginning of next month to have reconstruction on her skull. a recovery, but still the start of a long process. >> matthew chance in london. she looks beautiful. looks great.

and the experience she tried to correct it, she was ignored by cnn and of voice of america, every news outlet and around the world published her picture when she went publicly to fix that the revolutionaries accused her of trying to steal the symbol of their hero, the person doing so much to mobilize the revolution and then the government came in and said i want you to say you are still alive and this never happened and she wouldn't do that. they said we will charge you with treason and kill you said she had to leave. she talked about how she lived all the time. i was happy with that interview. i wasn't happy with it, i really do, there is this low point of having people in them and talking to it, but i felt like he got through in a way that any listener could understand what the experience was, and any time i feel that we take a stranger and make them familiar to the listeners i'm really proud of that interviews. i wish we had more individuals on the show in that discussion of trends and policies. everything that goes through the media has to have stakes so the program doesn't become a borin

. cnn and "the associated press" are both reporting that the -- that the terrorists are reporting 30 hostages and another 60 are still unaccounted for. we'll take a look at the video just released. it shows algerians leaving the complex. but hostages are still being held at that complex. this is one of the hostages held at the plant. he was injured yesterday when the algerian government tried to free hostages. cnn says they are sending in a plane to rescue hostages. the terrorists came dozens were killed yesterday, including five americans. we tried to get the pentagon and state department to confirm those numbers for us this morning but they would not. the militants are demanding the release of two terrorists in exchange for two american hostages. leon panetta is telling hostage takers to he release them immediately. >> not in ail leer jaw, not in north africa, not anywhere. >> the state department says they will be holding a news conference 45 minutes from now. they will be taking questions. we expect to learn a lot more from them at that point. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news.

decision from the pentagon. cnn has learned that defense secretary leon panetta will announce a lift on the ban against women serving in combat positions. this is pretty incredible. this move could open up 230,000 front line jobs to women in the military. cnn this weekend, a column that might agree with some of the comments the caller was just making. host: we will bring in ken, from albion, michigan, on the democratic line. caller: i wanted to make a comment about violent media during commercials. you are watching a show that does not having any violence in its, and then you go to commercials and the gaming industry might show call of duty, or a trailer for an upcoming movie that is extremely violent, even though the content you are watching has no violence in it. you are bombarded during the commercials. host: you are saying that you cannot avoid the violence even when you try? caller: correct. host: what needs to be done? ratings on commercials? caller: i think that they need to curb that as far as it is allowed to be shown during certain tv show programs. host: i want to bounce this comment from the mercurial entertainment association in the story from "the washington times." host: you disagree? you think it needs to be more regulation? caller " no, not in terms of what is being sold -- caller: no, not in terms of what is being sold
